Shin Splints is an over-use inflammatory condition causing a painful inflammation of the periosteum- the dense outer layer of the connective tissue lining the bones-which occurs either along the inside or the outside of the shin bone. Shin splints generally have two causes, excessive pronation or beginning an exercise program too vigorously or intensely.

Symptoms may include:

  • pain in front of outer leg below the knee
  • pain located on the outer edge of the mid region of the leg
  • pain noted in the early portion of the workout, then lessens, reappearing near the end of the training session
  • Pain is dull at first but with continuing exercise becomes so extreme as to cause the athlete to stop running.
